CIVIL DEPUTY

Position Summary

Prepares and serves civil and criminal documents in the fulfillment of the statutory requirements of service and execution of civil process; responds to inquiries from the public regarding civil process; maintains files and databases related to service; responds to urgent incidents and calls within the Pitkin County campus; and provides administrative support to the Sheriff’s Office as needed. 


This position physically serves Civil paperwork throughout the community. The Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) will provide training to ensure the individual’s safety.


POST-certified and non-POST-certified candidates will be considered for this role.

Job Responsibilities

  •  Prepares paperwork associated with the civil process; provides initial workup of papers delivered by mail or in person; performs research regarding the location of service; enters information regarding papers that have been served or attempted to be served into log and database; completes paperwork for filing with the Court. 
  • Serves civil documents in compliance with statutory requirements; drives to all areas of Pitkin County in a marked PCSO Civil Division car to serve documents.
  • Prepares paperwork associated with the civil process; provides initial workup of papers delivered by mail or in person; performs research regarding the location of service; enters information regarding papers that have been served or attempted to be served into log and database; completes paperwork for filing with the Court. 
  • Provides follow-up to complete the civil procedure including all billing and record keeping; records accounts payable and receivable; completes refunds and notices of failure to pay on a monthly basis.
  • Performs legal research in association with civil process; may assign service to deputies.
  • Disseminates general information to the public regarding the policy and procedures of the Civil Process Division, while ensuring no liability for the Sheriff’s Office.
  • Identifies, researches, recommends, and implements new policy and procedures for the Civil Process Division and disseminates information to staff.  
  • Supports the relationship between Pitkin County government and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens, visitors, and County staff; maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and County information; performs other duties as required or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications, Knowledge and Skills

  •  High School Diploma or GED equivalent. Some college experience is preferred.
  • Must pass a criminal background investigation and psychiatric evaluation.
  • Ability to obtain Notary Public within six (6) months.
  • Must possess a valid Colorado Driver’s License and acceptable Motor Vehicle Record.

Physical Demands and Working Environment

 Work is performed in internal and external environments with exposure to inclement weather; subject to unhappy or disgruntled individuals, dangerous vehicles, and the potential for ballistic and physical attacks; may be exposed to hazardous chemicals, drugs, infectious and communicable diseases.
